Plant Research

The three plants that I would like to grow are cucumbers, cat nip, and Myosotis sylvatica (Forget me not). I chose these because cucumbers are my favorite vegetable and I like how it it is smooth and very juicy in the inside. It contains a lot of water like watermelons. I feel like cucumbers are good to use in salads or a snack to munch on.

The second one that I chose was cat nip. I didn't actually plan on growing cat nip because I was only thinking we could grow fruits, vegetables, and flowers but after browsing the web I want top grow my own cat nip. I think this will benefit me because I have a cat and I'll save money by spending money. This will be a unique collection for our class garden because I don't think anyone else will be growing it.

The last one is a flower known as forget me not. I love the blue-purple color it has and even though it is a very small flower it stands out. I originally planned on planting daisies but I wanted to see what other flowers I could plant.

Cucumber:
-Vegetable
-Warm Season (Mid March-July)
-Days to Germ.:4-12
-Grown from seed
Soil temp. for germ.: 65-70°F
-Days to maturity: 50-60
-Moderate amount of water, requires sun/shade.
-Grows 6-8 inches.
-If I plant it during March it should be ready just in time before school ends.
- It doesn't take much space.
- The plants need to be started in sterile or pasteurized potting soil
-Don't over water, keep moist
-Water only at the base so leaves don't get wet , not so much water.
Interesting fact: Since Cucumbers are made of 95% water, they are not high in nutrients like other vegetables, but they still taste pretty darn good.

Catnip:
-Herb
-Grown from a seed
- Anytime in the growing season
-Days to germ:10-20
-Soil temp for germ:soil temp. for germ.: 60-70°F
-Days to Maturity: 90
-Water Less,Drought Tolerant
-Full Sun/Partial Shade
- Grows 2-3 ft.
-Plant Spacing: 10-14"
- Should be expected after two months of growing
-Moderate amount of space
- Wait until any dew has evaporated before harvesting in order to prevent molding
- Cut entire stems of the base of the plant
Interesting Fact: Not only can catnip be used for attracting cats but it can me made into tea and enhance salads.

Forget Me Not:
-Flower
- Early Season,
- Seed grown
-Waterside plant, so moisture is all-important. Rich soils.
-Low growing (Under 1ft.)
-Bloom season late spring
- Full sun to partial sun
-pH 6.1 - 7.8
-Temperature: 68 - 72F
-Plant Spacing: 9 - 12 inches
- Not medicinal
Interesting Fact: A legend about the origin of the name forget-me-not is as follows. Once a medieval knight and his lady-love were walking beside a river. The knight held a bouquet in his hands. Because of the weight of the armor, he fell into the water. According to the legend, he threw the bouquet at her shouting forget-me-not.
